THEA 470 is the capstone thesis course for Theatre Studies majors and the culmination of the department’s four-year curriculum and performance/practicum sequence that incorporates Guilford’s college-wide focus on Principled Problem Solving. Successful completion of the thesis is required for graduation as a Theatre Studies major. The course requires students to synthesize their cumulative learning experiences in multiple theatre disciplines and apply them in positions of major responsibility within the practical context of producing a play. The work requires students to articulate an artistic philosophy, assess the skills they bring to the work, set goals and objectives for the production, research the “world of the play” and the methodology of the playwright, analyze the text in relation to their specific assignments, maintain ongoing documentation of research and work processes before and during the rehearsals period, and assess their processes and accomplishments following public performances.
